Explain to students that as they conduct their reading assignment for the day they will record five unknown words on the chart and the meaning of those words that they infer based on context clues. Explain to students that context clues are pieces of information in the words or sentences or illustrations that help supply the meaning of the word. Allow students to use their home language l1 if their partner speaks the same language. Encourage students to talk about context clues with their families.
Tell students that what they just did using the pictures or other words helped them figure out the words computer car and dog even though they didn t know what the words were.
List 8 12 words on the board. Look at the surrounding sentences for other words with nearly the same meaning. Have students practice identifying context clues in text deciphering their meaning. Let the rest of the sentence help you figure out the word.
